Anaerobic Digesters

No matter how hard we try we will always produce waste – and too much of it! There are 3 options for dealing with this waste – bury it in landfill sites (This is becoming more expensive as land prices rise), burn it with the resulting gases being released in the atmosphere (At a cost to us and our planet) or bio digest it through anaerobic digestion (AD) (low cost Rapid ROI and a sellable product is produced through this process)

Anaerobic Digestion is a wonderful biological process in which bacteria, commonly found in soil and deep water, break down organic material in the absence of oxygen, into biogases that can be used to generate energy. The material left at the end of the process (the digestate) exits the container in two forms, a liquid fertilizer and a dry mulch (Much like soil) it is rich in nutrients and is an excellent natural fertilizer.

A single 40ft container can process 500kg of organic material per day and can be increased to up to 6 ton a day with additional digesters ideal for schools, hotels or even small communities to power and heat your life with waste!

Pollution Reduction

Anaerobic digestion has the potential to reduce both emissions to atmosphere, as well as watercourse pollution from run-off, for a wide range of feedstocks which currently cause these environmental problems, of which the largest by volume are agricultural slurries.

In line with the best practice AD plants, slurry is scraped into the digester on a daily basis, so GHG emissions such as carbon dioxide, methane and ammonia are kept to an absolute minimum in order to maximise the biogas potential of the slurry.

Furthermore, if slurries are co-digested with other feedstocks which would normally be sent to landfill or stored/disposed of in such a way as to emit GHGs, AD can successfully capture and utilise this renewable energy.

Heat Pumps

You probably already own a heat pump – refrigerators and freezers are all heat pumps taking heat out to keep the inside cool. Our heat pumps take heat from either the ground or the air and use the energy to heat your home and provide hot water.

This amazing technology is not new: in the 1950′s several heat pumps were installed in a bid to save energy and fuel costs. One of the most famous at Royal Festival Hall in London extracted heat from the River Thames (and worked very well).

Heat pumps do require electricity, however the total heat energy output is several times higher than the electricity required (the heat pump is said to be 400% efficient for every 1kw of electricity put in to the heat pump 4 kw of heat is passed on to the heating system) and we can provide Solar PV to power the running of your heat pump making your system almost free to run.

Our Air Source Heat pump takes heat from the air and can be installed in new build or retrofitted. Best suited to under floor heating it can also work with standard oversized radiators or alternatively low temp fan coil radiators. We can install in around 2 days to an average size property

Our Ground Source Heat pump takes heat from the ground and can be also be installed in a new build or retrofitted but excavation and groundwork’s are required a big garden is not always required we can have a bore hole drilled in a area the size of a small car that will provide the heat pump with a constant brine temperature all year round. Ground source heat pumps are more efficient than air source due to the constant year round temperature from the ground.  This system is also best suited to under floor heating but can work with oversized radiators or fan coil radiators, and takes typically takes around 4 days to install.

Then Solar thermal energy is for you!

Solar thermal is the simplest technology of them all – the collector on the roof (flat panel or evacuated tubes) simply absorbs the suns energy and heats up the simple to use controller sees this heat and pumps the hot fluid around the hot water cylinder heating the domestic hot water. The system is also very effective at heating swimming pools and hot tubs. Since heating water accounts for over a quarter of your domestic energy you can cut the cost of your bills dramatically. A typical solar thermal system will provide 75% – 85% of your hot water per annum and evacuated tubes still perform in sub zero temperatures as long as there is sunlight.

Solar thermal energy is different from solar photovoltaic energy, which converts the suns energy directly into electricity. However there is less capital outlay and the system is very affordable. It only takes 2 days to install and reduces your carbon footprint so it makes good sense!

A solar compliant hot water cylinder is fitted as part of the kit giving you full mains pressure hot and cold water meaning full flow high pressure showers and fast filling baths! Another added bonus is most if not all cold water storage tanks and pipe work is removed from the attic meaning no more burst pipes in the winter and peace of mind.

The great thing about this system is that it can be installed in 2 days and you don’t need hours of hot sunshine to produce electricity. Its all about solar radiation so even Scottish daylight works very effectively and can generate huge amounts of electricity.

How does it work?  Basically, photons of light knock electrons into a higher state of energy to create electricity.

The system is suitable for new build, and roof tiles with integrated PV cells are now available, or panels can be retrofitted into existing buildings; in this case they are usually fitted on top of the existing roof structure.  Alternatively, a group of panels can be located separately away from the building but connected by cable to supply the power. Domestic Energy Performance Certificate

By law, all domestic properties that are being sold or rented require an Energy Performance Certificate:

• Selling a Property

Our current laws state that anyone selling a domestic property is required to have ordered an EPC by the time a property goes on the market.
All agents are required to have uploaded a full Energy Performance Certificate within 28 days of marketing.

• Renting a Property

Our current laws state that every Landlord must have an Energy Performance Certificate available for the information of any prospective tenant.

• What’s an EPC

An Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) is the Government’s chosen way of complying with the Energy Performance of Building Directive (EPBD). Its purpose is to record how energy efficient a property is. The certificate will provide a rating of the energy efficiency and CO2 emissions of a building from A to G, where A is very efficient and G is very inefficient.

EPCs are produced using standard methods with standard assumptions about energy usage so that the energy efficiency of one building can easily be compared with another building of the same type.

This allows prospective buyers, tenants, owners, occupiers and purchasers to see information on the energy efficiency and CO2 emissions from their building so they can consider energy efficiency and fuel costs as part of their investment.

An EPC is always accompanied by a recommendation report that lists cost effective and other measures (such as low and zero carbon generating systems) to improve the energy rating of the building. The certificate is also accompanied by information about the rating that could be achieved if all the recommendations were implemented.
Who is Responsible for obtaining an EPC?

If a building is being built, the person carrying out the work must obtain the EPC, provide the owner with it and inform the building control officer or approved inspector that this has been done within the specified period.

If the building is being sold or let, responsibility for provision of the EPC will rest with the seller or landlord. The EPC is to be made available free of charge to any prospective buyer or tenant prior to entering into a sale or lease agreement. Procedure

The energy survey needed to produce an EPC is performed by an assessor who visits the property, examines key items such as loft insulation, domestic boiler, hot water tank, radiators, windows for double glazing, and so on. He or she then inputs the observations into a software programme which actually performs the calculation of energy efficiency.

The programme gives a single number for the rating of energy efficiency, and a recommended value of the potential for improvement. There are similar figures for environmental impact. A table of estimated energy bills per annum (and the potential for improvement) is also presented, but without any reference to householder bills.

The householder will have to pay for the survey. The exercise is entirely non-invasive, so assessors have to take certain amount of information on trust from householders, such as whether or not cavity wall insulation is present unless there is evidence such as drill holes present.

Lux & Lumens Levels

Lux is the globally standardized SI unit of illumination. It provides a uniform standard by which the amount of visible light present in a given space can be described. A lux rating is used to describe the perceived illumination of a known space, such as a room or a stage. The lumen is the globally standardized SI unit of “luminous flux” meaning that it measures just how much visible light is produced by an object such as, for example, a light bulb. With clarity on the difference lumens and lux, conversion between the two is simple.

What is efficacy?

In lighting design, “efficacy” refers to the amount of light (or Luminous Flux) produced by a lamp (a light bulb or other light source), usually measured in Lumens, and abbreviated to LM. The efficacy of cool white (also referred to as day light) is generally higher than that of warm white.

Definition of LED Color Temperature

LED colour temperature measures the colour of an LED light bulb. It defines the amount of pure white, yellow, red and blue in a light. Another way to think of the colour temperature is how ‘warm’ or ‘cool’ is the white LED light bulb.
Colour temperature is measured in degrees Kelvin and is a measure of the part of the colour spectrum that is found in light.
A simple way to think about this is to compare the light from the sun from sunrise to sunset.

At noon the light is bright and white, even more so nearer the equator. At sunrise and sunset the light takes on a more yellow or even red tint. Lower colour temperatures will have more yellow, and higher colour temperatures will go from yellow, to pure white and eventually to bluish, like you might find on some of the blue tinted headlights on cars.

What is CRI?

The colour rendering index (CRI) (also sometimes referred to as the (colour rendition index), is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reproduce the colours of various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source (daylight). Light sources with a high CRI are desirable in colour critical applications such as photography or cinematography and are also important in retail applications. The CRI does not bear any reference to the colour temperature (or CCT) of the light and this is normally also advised within the datasheet.

As an indicator below are some potential CRI (from 1 to 100) bandings for certain applications

  • CRI of 70 is ok for streetlights or general illumination such as floodlights.
  • CRI of 80+ is required for nice quality lighting applications
  • CRI 0f 0ver 95 is used for best colour clarity for Museums, skin tones etc
  • A CRI of greater than 90 requires better and more complex driving and optics

What is CCT?

The CCT is the correlated colour temperature which in layman’s terms gives a spectrum of general colour from 1000k to around 7000k when associated with lamps or light sources. It is a highly technical scale based on many factors but to give basic indicators a warm white colour lamp would be in the region of 3000k to 4000k and a cool white colour lamp would be around 6000k.
